6 Ways Working Moms Can Balance Work and Family

Nowadays, there are more moms in the workforce than ever before. Finding the right balance between work and family can be a difficult task. Working a full time job and being a full time mother is no walk in the park. Here are 6 tips to help you find the right balance between work and family. 

1. LET GO OF THE GUILT

Mothers are often judged for “abandoning" their children when returning to work full-time. This is an extremely unfair way of seeing things. Rather than focusing on the time spent away from home, you should focus on how your job is ultimately benefiting your family. It’s important to come to terms with the choices you have made and focus on the priorities that are in the moment. 

 

2. CREATE AND ORGANIZE A FAMILY CALENDAR

A calendar is a great way to organize and have all your thoughts and tasks under one roof. You could include due dates for bills, assignments for chores, school/family events, extracurricular activities, birthdays, and more. Google Calendar is a great digital resource; however, we recommend getting a large dry erase board if you prefer organizing your calendar by hand. Taking the time to plan out your week will reduce confusion and eliminate surprises throughout the week. 

 

3. USE TIME SAVING HACKS

Use shortcuts to get the most done in the least amount of time. Order your groceries online and use curbside pick-up or delivery services. You save time and won’t forget anything. Another way to wave time is by getting organized the night before. Avoid starting the day in a hectic manner by packing your child’s lunch, laying out your child’s clothes for the next day, and deciding on what to eat in the morning. By getting organized the night before, you can start out your day on a fresh note. 

 

4. LIMIT DISTRACTIONS AND TIME WASTERS

As a mom, you should be mindful of how much time you spend on your phone, whether that is checking emails, making phone calls, or roaming through social media. It is important to reduce your screen time and unplug in order to maximize the quality of time you have with your children and partner. Avoid multitasking when spending time with your children. Remember that the quality of the time spent together is just as important as the quantity of time spent together. Lastly, when at work, avoid wasting time. The last thing you want is to take up valuable time with your family to complete unfinished work tasks. 

 

5. CREATE FUN AND MEANINGFUL FAMILY ACTIVITIES

Make the most out of your time with your family by organizing activities for everyone to enjoy. You could organize a family game night, plan a picnic in the backyard, or watch a movie. Don’t forget to ask your children for ideas too. It’s a great way to get the whole family involved.  


6. CREATE MOMENTS FOR YOURSELF

Moms have a bad habit of putting their own needs last in order to take care of everyone else first. Finding and making personal time throughout the week is an essential part of being the best version of yourself. You can’t be an effective spouse or parent if you are cranky. A refreshing break will allow you to recharge and destress. Start a new book. Join a yoga class. Catch up with a friend. Take a nap. Just do something that makes you happy.
